Mission Winery was founded with a deep appreciation for the history and significance of the Mission grape and its vital role in the early days of viticulture in New Mexico. In 1629, Franciscan monks established the mission of San Antonio de Padua in the Rio Grande Valley, near present-day Socorro. It was here that the first documented grapevines were planted, marking the birth of wine making in the United States. Spanish missionaries cultivated these grapes to craft wines for holy communion, honoring the rich tradition of wine’s connection to spiritual practices.Despite the promising beginnings, the wine industry in New Mexico faced its share of challenges over the years. Political upheavals, changing borders, and shifts in cultural preferences affected the growth of viticulture. In the 1980s a revival of winemaking began and today New Mexico has close to 50 wineries.
Our journey began in 2019 with a vision to blend the wisdom of the past with innovative techniques to create wines that are good for the earth and for your body. We believe in sustainable growing of our grapes and minimal intervention in our winemaking. All our vineyards use sustainable farming techniques in an effort to prioritize environmental stewardship, economic viability, and social responsibility. This method of farming aims to minimize the negative impact on the environment while maintaining the long-term health and productivity of vineyards. We also believe in mindful wine making which involves minimal intervention, additives and no sugar.
